Tāwharau Ora, the School of Veterinary Sciences at Massey University, invites applications for a Practicing Veterinarian/Senior Practicing Veterinarian to join the Massey University Pet Emergency Centre, located within the Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital on the Manawatū campus in Palmerston North.
This is a full-time position; however, part-time hours could be negotiated for the right candidate.

Our AVMA-accredited veterinary programme is world renowned, providing quality, research-led education. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) is a state-of-the-art facility, offering New Zealand’s most comprehensive veterinary expertise.
We are open to the public, offering routine small animal services, specialist diagnostic procedures and treatments, and a 24/7 Pet Emergency Centre.
The veterinary facilities have undergone a major refurbishment, which will ensure Massey remains at the forefront of international veterinary scientific research and teaching, and helps meet the growing demand for qualified veterinarians.

This position is based in our emergency service. The main focus is on the delivery of clinical service to clients, support of our rotating interns, and clinical teaching to undergraduate veterinary students.
Our AVMA-accredited veterinary programme is world renowned, providing quality and research-led education. The successful applicant will provide high-quality veterinary care as part of a collaborative team of specialists, veterinarians, nurses, interns and students.
Your roster pattern will involve a mixture of day, evening and weekend shifts. To ensure a good work-life balance, there are no scheduled overnight shifts.
There is the opportunity to work alongside our specialist team during the day and evening shifts to improve your skill set in areas of your choice. We encourage ongoing professional development, and internal and external opportunities are available.
Within our Companion Animal Hospital, you will be working alongside ECC specialists, a range of specialist services, other emergency veterinarians and rotating interns in New Zealand’s only Veterinary Teaching Hospital facility.
We provide 24/7 emergency and critical care for veterinary clinics throughout the wider Manawatū-Whanganui region. Alongside our Community Practice and referral clinics, this leads to a challenging and extremely rewarding work environment.
Mōu | About you
Do you have:
- A Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) or equivalent and are you registered (or able to be registered) as a veterinarian in NZ? Your veterinary degree must be from an AVMA-accredited school or one recognised by the New Zealand Veterinary Council to enable full registration in New Zealand as a veterinarian. - 2+ years of experience in small animal clinical practice, preferably with a focus on small animal emergency medicine?
- The drive to upskill and grow or rediscover your passion for helping animals and their owners?
- Experience and empathy towards the cultural, emotional and physical state of our clients and patients alike?
- A positive attitude and a passion for teamwork, critical care and client relations?
- A genuine interest in undergraduate and postgraduate clinical instruction?
