Acute Traumatic Wound Management

Microsoft Teams Webinar
24 Mar 2026,07:00 pm - 08:00 pm

Acute Traumatic Wound Management - presented by Dr Lincoln Chau

Traumatic wounds are a common emergency presentation in small animal practice, yet many involve far more than surface injury. Bite wounds, motor vehicle trauma and penetrating injuries often combine contamination, tissue devitalisation and occult thoracic or abdominal damage. Successful management requires systematic assessment, appropriate stabilisation, and thoughtful decision-making.

This webinar provides a practical, evidence-based framework for managing acute traumatic wounds. Key topics include wound assessment, irrigation and debridement strategies, primary closure versus open wound management, drainage options, and modern dressing selection. Current literature will be reviewed to support clinical decision-making in the acute setting.

The session will also address recognition and management of penetrating thoracic and abdominal injuries, including indications for further imaging, surgical exploration, and referral. Through case examples and clinical insights, participants will gain confidence in approaching complex trauma while avoiding tunnel vision and optimising patient outcomes.
