Veterinary Cardiologists Australia (VCA) is offering a position for a three-year American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM)-approved cardiology residency training program beginning in August 2027, pending prior completion of a speciality cardiology internship. An internship position beginning on January 4th, 2027 is also being offered. The intention is that the successful internship applicant will transition to the residency position.

The residency program aims to facilitate successful specialist certification of the resident through the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology subspecialty) and/or the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. This will be achieved through participation in all aspects of the cardiology service provided by VCA and training in noninvasive diagnostic skills (echocardiography, in-house and ambulatory electrocardiography), interventional cardiology (cardiac catheterization, diagnostic angiocardiography, balloon valvuloplasty, transvascular patent ductus arteriosus occlusion, temporary and permanent transvenous pacemaker implantation) and mitral valve transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER). The cardiology trainee will work closely with three ABVC-registered specialist cardiologists (ACVIM and FANZCVS- qualified) and two senior, and one junior, ACVIM-enrolled residents-in-training. VCA is the largest and most-experienced hospital-based, multi-cardiologist group in Australia and operates from a dedicated state-of-the-art cardiology-only referral hospital in Brisbane. Within the same medical precinct are two independent multidisciplinary specialist hospitals (Veterinary Specialist Services and Cat Specialist Services). Dr Masami Uechi and the Jasmie Heart Group travel to VCA every 3 months to perform open-heart repair of the mitral valve under cardiopulmonary bypass in VCA’s dedicated hybrid theatre. VCA is also involved in undergraduate teaching of  veterinary students at the University of Queensland, Gatton. The trainee will have primary case responsibility for a spectrum of cardiac patients including urgent/ emergent cardiac patients, hospitalized cardiac critical care patients, routine non-urgent referred patients and patients of other referral hospitals in SE QLD referred for outpatient assessment.

Didactic rounds include cardiology and medicine journal club, physiology rounds, graphic/ cardiac pathology rounds, and topic-based presentations. The resident must also perform a retrospective or prospective research project within the timespan of the program for abstract presentation at the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists College Science Week or ACVIM and prepare a manuscript for publication.

VCA seeks candidates who have a high maturity level, are hard-working, self-motivated and passionate about providing a high level of compassionate care to referral cardiology patients and their owners.

The successful candidates must be eligible for General Veterinary Registration by the Queensland Veterinary Surgeons Registration Board. Remuneration is from AUD$85,000 p.a (resident); AUD$73,000 p.a (intern).
