Residency in Equine Internal Medicine

The School of Agricultural, Environmental and Veterinary Sciences, Charles Sturt University (CSU), is inviting applications for a three and a half year, fixed-term residency position in Equine Internal Medicine, linked to a professional doctorate, commencing in February 2026.

 

The position will satisfy credential requirements for the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists and/or European College of Equine Internal Medicine and completion of the Doctor of Veterinary Studies (DVStud). The successful candidate will receive advanced clinical and research training in equine medicine at the Veterinary Clinical Centre (VCC), CSU, under the direct supervision of specialists. Additional training in related disciplines will be provided by specialists at the VCC and during external placements. The VCC has a strong caseload covering all aspects of equine medicine, equine theriogenology, equine surgery, equine sports medicine, dentistry and anaesthesia.

 

The position will include involvement in clinic rounds, journal club and seminars. After-hours and on-call duty will be performed under the guidance of specialists. Residents participate in undergraduate student teaching, and complete a clinical research project. Training in research methods, scheduled periods to dedicate to research, thesis writing and publication mentoring are provided.

 

The VCC has state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including advanced ultrasonographic equipment, endoscopy equipment, ophthalmic equipment, computed tomography, digital radiography, surgical equipment, advanced reproductive equipment, high-speed treadmill, purpose-built intensive care and isolation facilities and access to the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, Veterinary Pre-Clinical Centre and Equine Centre at CSU.

 

The successful applicant will be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or permanent Australian resident, have a veterinary degree registrable in New South Wales and a minimum of two years of veterinary professional experience. A demonstrated interest in equine medicine and advanced written and verbal communication skills are essential.

The successful applicant will be enrolled as a full-time student in the DVStud programme and receive a tax-free scholarship (minimum of $50,000 per annum), conference attendance support, and payment for after-hours duties. Financial support is provided for the research project. An allowance for relocation is available.
